I have often felt aid organizations can do more to identify with and help supporters relate to the communities they are helping. As such, I’d like to develop the content in this Voices section to reflect more than just needs and pleas in Sri Lanka. Before embarking on this project, I knew almost nothing about the island nation outside of a vague notion of some kind of long and drawn out war. Now, my gaze captures practically everything related to the country. Some of it trivial, some ridiculous, some scathing, some funny.
What emerges from my research into and experience with the country is categorically all over the map. Much of it I want to share with you, so I expect as we move forward this Voices section will be all over the map, too. I hope that’s an adequate enough explanation for some of the content you find here, including the previous post about Sir Tennent’s 19th Century account of the country.
Don’t get me wrong: Our projects are of prime importance, so there will be times when I post updates interlaced with appeals for support. But upon returning here you may also find elaborate personal accounts, the occasional one-line observation, videos, and even the occasional political cartoon.
I hope you find some value to what I and others compile here, even if it’s unexpected or surprising (like Sri Lanka itself). Your input is important. Let us know the kinds of things you’re interested in discovering about Sri Lanka, even if it involves Keelbacked Water Snakes (pictured, by Nirudha Perera). You’re invited to contribute something of your own, too. Just email info@p2prescue.org and tell us what you’d like to show or tell. –SK
